Why play belongs at the centre of language learning

A learner wins a vocabulary game, laughs, and asks, “But when do we get back to the lesson?”

That game was part of the lesson.

Games, music, movement, and gesture are often treated as decorations around “real” language study. Teachers use them after grammar. Parents see them as a reward for finishing the worksheet. Adult learners may enjoy them, then quietly worry that they have paid for entertainment rather than education.

When these activities are designed well, they create the conditions under which language is learned: meaningful input, sustained attention, decisions about meaning, repeated retrieval, emotional engagement, and immediate feedback. A well-built game is the machinery of acquisition.

The qualification matters. A random song or a points system pasted onto a dull exercise will not produce fluency. The activity must make the learner process and use language.

What the EEF review actually found

The UK Education Endowment Foundation’s Rapid Evidence Assessment of foreign-language learning examined research on teaching methods, classroom conditions, and language outcomes. Its conclusion was less convenient than “Method X always works.”

It found that programme characteristics and practitioner skills are key. In plain English, the activity’s name matters less than what a capable teacher makes learners do inside it.

The review favoured largely meaning-oriented approaches that provide rich, authentic, stimulating input and increase learners’ “involvement load.” It also found a place for carefully timed attention to form. Learners need to understand a message, notice how English expresses it, and do something with that knowledge.

This is exactly where purposeful play earns its place. Consider a role-play in which one learner has a train schedule and another has a list of appointments. They must find the only train that works. The language is not recited for display; it carries information required to solve a problem. “Does the 10:40 arrive before noon?” matters because the answer changes the outcome.

The EEF report also reviewed work on songs, imagery, gesture, and movement. One factual correction is useful here: the activity group sometimes described in summaries as “Gesture + Music” was labelled “Gesture + Motor Activity” in the report. It involved 88 Honduran children aged four to seven learning 22 English body-part words over five weeks. The combined group scored highest descriptively, although the study did not run inferential analyses, so it cannot prove that the treatment caused the difference.

The study's limits matter because a promising classroom result can easily turn into a miracle claim. In another study reviewed by the EEF, 111 children learned 14 Italian words. Children who physically enacted the meanings performed best on free recall, yet even their average remained below three words out of fourteen.

Games raise the involvement load

Laufer and Hulstijn’s involvement-load hypothesis proposes that vocabulary retention depends partly on three demands created by a task:

  • Need: Does the learner need the word to achieve something?
  • Search: Must the learner find or recall the word or its meaning?
  • Evaluation: Must the learner compare options and decide which word fits?

A conventional matching worksheet may require little more than recognition. A well-built game can require all three.

Imagine that teams must choose five objects for an emergency landing on a frozen lake. One learner wants a blanket but cannot remember the word. She describes it, searches her memory, listens to suggestions, rejects towel, retrieves blanket, and then argues that it is more useful than a mirror. The word has been needed, searched for, evaluated, heard, and spoken.

Each decision forced another encounter with blanket.

This is why some games waste time and others are dense learning events. A game in which fast learners shout answers while everyone else waits has low involvement for most of the room. A game with an information gap, individual accountability, useful repetition, and changing choices can keep every learner processing English.

It also strengthens the connections in the learner’s mental vocabulary. It means building fast links among sound, spelling, meaning, context, grammar, and related words.

Music and gesture give language additional retrieval routes

Music is useful when it carries language rather than merely playing behind it. Rhythm marks stress. Melody makes repetition tolerable. Songs preserve chunks such as “Would you like to…?” as coordinated sound sequences instead of six isolated items.

That matters because fluent speakers do not construct every sentence one word at a time. They retrieve familiar patterns, then adapt them. A chant that highlights the rhythm of “Could I have a cup of tea?” can prepare a learner to produce “Could I have a window seat?” later.

Gesture provides another cue. A hand moving backward while saying used to can represent past habit. Two hands moving apart can mark a comparative difference. The movement ties an abstract form to a visible action and gives the learner something else to retrieve.

A timeline activity can pair “I’ve been working here for…” with one consistent forward hand movement. Later, if a learner stalls halfway through the sentence, the teacher can repeat that movement silently. The physical cue may reopen the route without translation or another grammar explanation.

Neither music nor gesture should become compulsory performance. Adults do not need to sing solos or wave their arms on command. Quiet tapping, marking sentence stress with a pen, arranging cards, or using one consistent hand movement can create the same kind of cue without embarrassment.

Emotion helps attention, but retrieval makes memory usable

Enjoyment can hold attention. Evidence of learning comes later, when the learner retrieves the language.

Emotion influences what receives attention and what later feels distinctive. A surprising answer, friendly competition, an absurd role-play, or the relief of finally making oneself understood can mark an episode in memory. Learners often remember the sentence that made the room laugh long after they forget which page contained the grammar table.

But “emotional” does not automatically mean “memorable in a useful way.” Research on emotion and the retrieval-practice effect found that retrieval practice benefited neutral words in that experiment but not negative words. High arousal can focus attention, yet it can also pull attention away from peripheral details or make a learner anxious.

The practical target is safe emotional engagement plus effortful recall.

Retrieval practice means trying to produce an answer before seeing it again. During a game, learners repeatedly retrieve phrases to ask, clarify, disagree, and repair misunderstandings. During a song, the teacher can pause before the final word and let learners supply it. During a gesture sequence, learners see the motion and recall the phrase rather than simply copying it from the board.

That effort changes the activity from exposure into practice. The answer should return later, too: near the end of class, two days afterward, and in a new context. Memory grows through successful retrieval spaced across time, not through one energetic afternoon.

The teacher turns activity into acquisition

The EEF’s emphasis on practitioner skill explains why copying a list of “ten fun ESL games” rarely produces a coherent course. The teacher must control the language demand, participation pattern, feedback, and return schedule.

Before using an activity, we can ask:

  1. What meaning must learners understand?
  2. What language must they retrieve rather than copy?
  3. What choice, comparison, or problem raises involvement?
  4. Who is speaking, and who can remain passive?
  5. When will the same language return in a different setting?

If those questions have good answers, a card game may contain more serious language work than twenty minutes of explanation. If they do not, the activity may indeed be a break.

A learner who is listening for meaning, searching for a phrase, testing it, noticing a reaction, correcting it, and retrieving it again is learning, even if there is music playing and somebody has just scored a point.
